Friendship 5K – sign up now !

Come join us at the Vineyard on Saturday, November 5th for the 2nd annual Friendship 5K ! This year’s race is sponsored by Union State Bank and RunTex, and benefits the Eula Hunt Beck Florence Public Library. The festivities will begin at 7:45 AM with a 1K Fun Run for kids 10 and under (free), followed by the 5K Fun Run / Walk at 8:00AM. Food and drink will be available after the race.

Summer Reading 2011

Wow, what a wonderful time this year. Our theme this year was “Dig up a Good Book” and I believe we did just that. We started on June 1st with Vic Morsbach reading and we got to make dog puppets. Then on June 8th Pat Smith came to read and we made Bone necklaces. On June 15th we had Heather Batten reading and we made Dinosaur puppets. And on our final day we had Patty Rodgers reading from her new book, “Abigail & Rumpus the Green Dinosaur” and we made Treasure Rocks. We had so much fun this year. In the end we had 126 children all month and 27 teens all month with 50 children signed up and 31 teens signed up.

Our winners this year are as follows:

1st place – Megan Combs reading 93 books

2nd place – Quetzal Licea reading 80 books

2nd place – Citlalli Licea reading 80 books

3rd place – Karsyn Hammons reading 67 books

But I want to thank ALL the children who participated in our Summer Reading Program, you are ALL winners for reading!

New Books

We are fortunate to receive a great selection of books from Dr. Wernecke and the Gault School of Archaeological Research. All the books are to help with this years Summer Reading theme, “Digging up a Good Book”. Title’s include “Archaeology for Kids” by Richard Panchyk, “Practical Archaeology” by Christopher Catling, “Clovis Technology” by Bruce A. Bradley, Michael B. Collins, & Andrew Hemmings, “The World Encyclopedia of Archaeology”, Eyewitness Book “Archeology”, “What Makes a Van Gogh A Van Gogh?” , “Gone Extinct”, “Mammoth Bones and Broken Stones” by David L. Harrison, “Lone Star Stalag” by Michael R. Waters, and “Digging up Texas” by Robert Marcom, plus others. Also donated were more copies of the DVD from the Gault School and the area. Come on by check out the great selection of books!

Spring Lecture Series 2011

Last night we completed this years lecture series with a talk by Barbara Wright, owner of Wright’s Nursery in Briggs. As always, Barbara brought a store house of knowledge to share with the audience and fielded numerous questions pertaining to each individuals needs. Despite the rather small crowd, we discussed many various areas from vegetables to lawns and trees. Barbara is very good at giving us localized information she has gleaned from numerous sources and years of hands on, practical experience with plants of all types. She brought along several books and flats of plants to sell at extremely reasonable prices. I highly recommend getting to know her as a source for ALL your planting needs. Her website wrightsnursey.net is a great place to start. Her primary business is the wholesale market but she seems always willing to deal with individuals who stop by.
After wards everyone stayed to visit with her and their friends and were treated to a great variety of refreshments from pot stickers to homemade cheesecake. It was a great way to end this years series and next years lectures should be on everyone’s calendar. The board is considering a few minor tweaks for next year and we will get that information out as soon as they do. Until then ,come enjoy all the other aspects of our wonderful small town library and GET INVOLVED !

Spring Lecture Series 2011…#3

Tuesday evening Feb.22nd found a large crowd at the library to enjoy a talk by author Joan Upton Hall. She’s a retired English teacher who turned to writing and has several books to her credit. Tuesdays talk was about her book ”Just Visitin’: Old Texas Jails”. It deals primarily with ghost stories and hauntings that are told about the old lockups around the state.The book is nicely illustrated and tells tales from over 40 jails of yesteryear. During her lecture Ms Hall related several personal experiences from her search and fielded questions from the audience. Everyone really enjoyed her talk and the refreshments and conversation that followed. This and her other books are printed by State House Press. They all looked like very ”fun reads”, so look for them at local book stores or better yet, come check one out at the library.
Next Tuesday at 6:30 we will conclude this years series with a garden talk and plant sale by Barbara Wright from the nursery in Briggs. She is always presents a good talk and usually brings quite a few various plants to sell. Come join us.
